Whitened teeth are something that almost all of us want, but what if you’re worried about harsh whitening products? Try these natural and easy teeth whitening remedies in the comfort of your own home.
Natural teeth whitening options are easy and inexpensive. It must be noted that those of us with very stained teeth do most likely require professional cleans by our hygienist or even a whitening session.
Otherwise, these may be great methods for those whose teeth just want to shine a little bit whiter and brighter.
1. Eat Strawberries!
As well as being incredibly delicious, strawberries can be a natural teeth whitener. A study by Dr. So Ran Kwon found that this method really works!
“The key thing is that strawberries contain malic acid, which whitens the teeth,” says Dr Richard Marques, a celebrity dentist. The same goes for apples, which not only contain malic acid but a lot of water, which helps wash away leftover food and residue on the teeth. Hard, crunchy vegetables such as carrots and celery also have a cleansing effect, says Marques.
2. Practice Good Oral Hygiene
This should go without saying but brush your teeth! Brushing can do more than just remove the leftover spaghetti you enjoyed for dinner. Fluoride can do wonders in whitening your teeth and preventing staining.
Brushing with a whitening toothpaste has also been scientifically shown to whiten your smile. These whitening toothpaste contain mild abrasives that scrub the teeth to remove the surface stain but are gentle enough to be safe.
Using an electric toothbrush may also be more effective in removing surface stains.
3. Say Cheese!
Another way you can protect your teeth is to chew a small cube of cheese after a meal. Casein – a milk protein – and whey protein in cheese have proven to reduce the loss of minerals from tooth enamel.
Chewing cheese also stimulates saliva flow which neutralises the harmful acids that decay or erode teeth.
4. Use a Straw
Another golden rule is to limit sugary drinks, and when you do drink them, use a straw. This will limit the contact between the stain causing food and your vulnerable teeth.
Drinks like soda or coffee can leave a real impact on the whiteness of your teeth; drinking them through a straw gives the beverage less exposure to your teeth – resulting in less dark staining. This is not to say that straws completely fix the problem but it definitely reduces it. You should still try and decrease the amount of overly sweet foods and beverages. This will do wonders for your teeth.
5. Turmeric
It’s relatively unknown why turmeric whitens teeth. Ironically, it seems to stain everything else! But if reports are to be believed this stuff works some natural-teeth-whitening magic. When used properly, turmeric is a safe option. Although evidence of its teeth-whitening properties is only anecdotal, studies do show that it brings oral health benefits that other natural remedies — and over-the-counter remedies — don’t.
Curcumin, the main compound in turmeric, can prevent gingivitis according to a 2012 study. They found that the anti-inflammatory properties of turmeric helped to prevent gum disease. A further study in 2013 then discovered that turmeric can even be used as dental pain relief.
